Linux high performance and high availability clustering
Recently I go interested in clustering linux servers. I have been looking around a bit and I didn't find much recent software for high performance and high availability clustering. Most references are about LVS and Linux-HA operating together. But isn't there any more modern software?
Besides that does anyone know where to find good documentation on how to install this?
There are two basic models for clustering. The first model is based on having one master node and many slave nodes. The first cluster software created for Linux using this model, AFAIK, is Beowulf.
The second cluster model is based on several nodes acting as equals. Jobs can be submitted from any node in the cluster and they can run on any node in the cluster. One software project based on this model is Mosix/Open Mosix.
You can look at sourceforge.net for a view of many projects in any category. Just browse the projects, then select the keyword that interests you. In this case you would select 'cluster' as the keyword.
Another popular project repository is freshmeat.net. Check them for software projects in addition to sourceforge.net.
I just found out that LVS is part of the kernel now. So I might still go for it. I probably also need heartbeat and ldirectord in Fedora. Is heartbeat the same as Linux-HA?
@stress_junkie: I am interested in the second cluster model. I have been looking into OpenMosix, but it seems to be discontinued. Mosix might be interesting, but a bit to expensive for someone learning how to cluster servers.
