linux equivelent to hypertermanel

I just got a CD rom bootable Linux disk today and am going to test it out shortly. As I have no manual I was wondering what linux offered that was the same as windows hypertemanil? I have stepper moters that I control with this program and am hoping linux offers some thing that works about the same.

So something that connects over the serial line. I think minicom can handle that.
