Linux does'nt boots
 

Hello,

I have Win 98 installed in a separate hard disk and Redhat 7.2 linux in another hard disk and I recently installed a freeware called OSL (OS Loader) to choose your choice OS to boot up. Previous to installing this, I had 'GRUB" as the default loader of linux. Now, when OSL shows Linux paritition and I press enter, it says, 'operating system missing' and directly boots Win 98. I even uninstalled he OSL but there is no trace of linux. (After POST, Win 98 boots up).
Where is the Grub missing? ANy solution??

i think there is some problem with ur XOSL installation... maybe it is not initializing the init perfectly...

anyways, if you want your grub back then go to this link... i do not know if it will work for RH7.2 (why are u so primitive) but it worked for me on RH8.. just give it a try

You need to use the 1st CD and boot to recovery mode. Then reinstall grub to the Master Boot Record. I don't know if RH has a menu option for its recovery mode.

If not run the command grub-install.

yes this is one more option, but it failed with me..
IN RH boot from your CD and type linux rescue
this will take you in rescue mode..
and /mnt/sysimage will be made..
cd /mnt/sysimage and type grub-install and it shud install grub for you but as i said, it did not work for me....

Thanx for all help. I reinstalled grub by using 'grub-install' command from linux rescue mode and got back my grub. Thanx once again.

Even though your problem has been solved - I'm going to offer a suggestion...

You said that you installed your Windows and Linux OSs onto seperate harddrives. I am going to presume that you installed your Grub bootloader (initially) onto the MBR of the harddrive containing Linux. If this is the case, then pointing your 3rd Party bootloader to the Linux partition isn't going to work because there was no bootloader on the partition - it was installed into the MBR. I am also going to guess that you installed your 3rd Party bootloader into the MBR of that disk. If this is the case, then there would be no way to boot Linux from your 3rd Party bootloader.

If you wanted to use your 3rd Party bootloader again - for whatever reason - then may I suggest that prior to doing so your install Grub/Lilo into the bootsector of your Linux partition as well as the MBR of that harddrive. That way, when you install your 3rd Party bootloader and overwrite the MBR, you should be able to successfully point it to the Linux partition and it boot.

Just a thought.

you can put the instalation image onto a floppy.
then change your bios to boot from floppy...

you just have to find the iso image first.
