Red face Linux Disappears after installing WinXP

I had both Linux and Win XP installed on my system but since my windows crashed I had to install it again. Now I am unable to see the boot loader itself. Win XP boots automatically without giving any option. What do I do now.

Please help me. I am a newbie as far as Linux is concerned. Is there any way I can avoid this problem in future if I have to install windows again.

Please help me I have a lot of data on my Linux so I can't even format it.

Hello arup255!
I got your problem and it is that installing Windows XP format your MBR(master boot record) of your hard-drive. And now you need to restore the configuration. For that you need to reinstall GRUB on the Hawrd-Drive. You can do that as follows:
First boot the system through Linux's boot disc in rescue mode by typing "linux rescue", log in as root and then at shell type following to fix the problem:
mount the system image as:
# chroot /mnt/sysimage

next type the following to install GRUB:
# grub-install /dev/hda
(where hda is your hard-drive.

now, rebooting your system will boot Linux only and to boot windows as well you need to edit your "/etc/grub.conf

title WindowsXP
rootnoverify hd(x,y)
chainloader +1
boot

where x and y are the output of the command, and decrease the number by 1.
# fdisk -l

hope this will solve your problem.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
