Hello arup255!
I got your problem and it is that installing Windows XP format your MBR(master boot record) of your hard-drive. And now you need to restore the configuration. For that you need to reinstall GRUB on the Hawrd-Drive. You can do that as follows:
First boot the system through Linux's boot disc in rescue mode by typing "linux rescue", log in as root and then at shell type following to fix the problem:
mount the system image as:
# chroot /mnt/sysimage
next type the following to install GRUB:
# grub-install /dev/hda
(where hda is your hard-drive.
now, rebooting your system will boot Linux only and to boot windows as well you need to edit your "/etc/grub.conf
title WindowsXP
rootnoverify hd(x,y)
chainloader +1
boot
where x and y are the output of the command, and decrease the number by 1.
# fdisk -l
hope this will solve your problem.
