linux digital media player - photo and video frame

Hello,

Over the last couple of weeks I have been using the plethora of article sin this forum to build a DSL based digital photo frame. I now have it up and running, copying random photos from my network and using gqview to play the photos.

What I really want is to show videos and photos, but can't find a solution to this, so really need your expert advice. As I see it I either need:
1) A single app that can play both photos and videos from a given directory or
2) a script to display a photo in one app for x seconds, close the app, open a movie in another app, wait for it to finish, close the app and move to the next file.

If you can help I would be most grateful
thanks
