Linux chat tool for internal network

Hello,

We are a non-profit running Fedora Core on LTSP in our office.

Is there software for chatting on our internal network? This will help us save a lot on bandwidth costs by sending intra-office messages through chat instead of email.

Thanks,
Ramdak

Jabber is used by a number of organisations and businesses (the one I work for included) and works well as an internal/external chat client/server.

And welcome to LQ

Just one question, though.

Would we have to install Jabber on every node or just on the server?

Thanks,
Ramdak

You could always use talk.

You would need one Jabber server (configured to either only talk internally or internally/externally) and the Jabber client to be installed on each workstation. The Jabber clients can be branded with your organisation's logo/name, which is part of the reason that it is becoming so popular in the corporate world.
