Linux Browsers

Hello everyone!

This is not really a question, more like my opinion about some linux browsers.

Opera 6.02
Lots on instability problems, sometimes Flash works, sometimes it doesn't. Java does not work at all (I got it to work once, but that was it)

Mozilla 1
I think this is a great browser, but its plugin support needs *a lot* of work. On normal 'static' pages it works great. But I have problems with its plugins, for example, sometimes flash works, but the most of the time the browser segfaults when I visit a page with a flash animation on (and what pages does not have one these days?). Java does not work at all. I've done everything I should to install it, and it shows up in about:plugins. But when I visit a page with an applet on, the browser segfaults. I *really* hope that they fix the plugin problems.

Netscape 6.02
I don't like it. Java and flash worked when the browser didn't crash. Its too bloated and slow. So for that reason I removed it.

Netscape 7.0 PR1
I downloaded it, installation was a breeze. And so far, no crashes! It 'feels' the same as mozilla since thats what its based on. And plugins WORK! Its not nearly as heavy as 6.x was, and it seems much more stable. Java works great, all the applets loads quickly. As for flash, it works great as well, although its a bit slow when compared to Opera. For example, if I open the "Starwars Gangsta Rap" in it, it plays fine, but the motion is a bit bumpy, but when I open it in Opera (when Opera doesn't crash  ) the motion is incredibly smooth. I've tried to install the Realplayer plugin, but it seems to me that its designed for Netscape 4.x, so it won't work in 7.x. To me it looks like Netscape 7 is mozilla with better multimedia/plugin support :)

I really hope that Opera's issues get resolved soon, since its the browser thats the most usable to me. When Mozilla's plugin support is better, it'll probably be the only browser I use. Netscape 7 is what I think I'll use for now, because it does what I want to do, and it does not crash.

Sorry for the long post!

If you'd like to get support for shockwave, quicktime movies, windwos media player internet content I suggest to spend 25 bucks on crossover plugin from http://codeweavers.com/home/
It works great, at least for me

How can I get all those plugins listed in there???

Have you tried phoenix 4.0.? Most of the mozilla plugins work with it and it is fast and furious.

try the newest Opera, 6.03, it works great for me, although it just closes down sometimes, about once a week, without any reason, in other words crashes, but as i said, very rarely.
And then if you want a lightweight, stable browser, go with lynx :)

Actually Phoenix 5.0 was just released a few days ago and it's really fast. I recommend it highly. I also makes really good use of TT Fonts so my web pages look great in it.

I'd also recommend Galeon - it's a great little browser that is a slight bit faster than Phoenix is. The great thing about Galeon is that it doesn't support profiles the way Mozilla does so you can have as many instances of it as you want just by typing in "galeon &" at the prompt.

Ok, I didn't ask for your opinion oabout the newest browsers. I like Mozilla, netscape, konqueror... And I use them. I was wandering if you byany chance know how can I download the plugis for java and stuff that I need. Thanks anyway

NSKL.... isn't that the same penguin that is here www.toms.net/rb ????

NSKL 12-11-2002 02:49 PM

Ya, i think it is, i stole it from somewhere else tho... can't remember where, but in the end i beleive the "original" is probably from Tom's..

I use the netscape java plugin for both mozilla and phoenix, and for flash make sure you get the new v6.0 linux plugin, the old v5.0 had a bug that causes the problems the some people get in mozilla.

Ciccio 12-11-2002 09:36 PM

yes. where do I download it from? in www.macromedia.com is the 5.0 only
