Linux boot up process Vs. Windows boot up process
I bought a "SONY VAIO digital studio computer". This computer starts boot up with some loud sound(somewhat like loud fan sound)and stops as soon as Windows XP finish boot up or completely shut down the computer.
The problem occured when I installed Hancom and Slackware linux on my computer. Both linux run fine; however, the loud system sound does not stops when linux finish boots up. The sound keep going on until I shutdown the computer or boot up to windows. From my opinion Linux don't know how to shut this sound down. (The sound is really annoying) I have 2 drives(C and D). I have 40Gb on D drive and 20 on C drive. I gave 10Gb to each linux on D drive. (There was noting on D drive before I install linux). If anyone know a solution, please e-mail me. Thank you. :Pengy: |
I'd check dmesg for error and fstab /proc/interrupts and /proc/devices to be sure everything was right then check with hdparms.

Sony VAIO Digital Studio
I am having every problem under the sun, trying to install redhat or slackware linux on a SOny VAIO Digital Studio PC. ( I.E. kernel panic ). I can eventually get the install on, but it appears that everytime I reboot, I get a different error message. Do I need special partitions? What can I do?
Thanks, Robert Liguori |
Sony Vaio - okay.
Thanks all...
I ran memtest86, there was bad memory in the box. Robert. |
Umm...ok
Umm... I might be wrong but if this was the first time u used your 2nd hard drive there might be something wrong with the 2nd hard drive and that causing the weird sounds because some of my old hard drives in the past have made some pretty funky sounds.

power management
It's definitly a fan making the noise, as my girlfriend has a PCV-RX651 VAIO that does the same thing. Some sort of power management call during bootup should fix it.

Sucess!!
I have a solution that was posted here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75972 install package: lm-sensors run: sensors-detect (answered "yes" to all of their questions) run: pwmconfig to set the preferences you can try to run fancontrol at this point as root to see if it is working. Finally add /usr/sbin/fancontrol & to /etc/rc.local |
