Linux and Scanning

My Fedora Core 6, kernel 2948, system shows that both SANE and XSANE are installed per the 'Add/Remove Software' feature. I even went so far as to do a yum install "XSANE" but it tells me there is no SANE available. Running the yum install "SANE" or Yum install "sane"and other variations results in 'nothing to do'.

I can get my scanning device to scan to .pdf files;however, I would like to scan items to a text file so I can add or change data to the scanned file as needed. How do I get a page scanned that will let me do this? Sometimes, the scanned page will be a swath out of the center of the page being scanned and is a .pdf file. The other selection appears to be .jpeg and other photo features but this isn't what I need.

Advice please.

you need to install an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) package to get text. gocr is quite good.

I use kooka for scanning (part of KDE) and it works fine.

I use GNOME and I tried yum install gocr which went to the repositores an installed something; however, I am unable to find the 'start' place. Can you advise?

When I try gocr.tcl as advised, the scan wants to make 8 copies of blank pages. I've tried reading all the features of gocr, but fail to compreend...

OK - I seem to have SANE installed under 'graphics -> Scanner utility' to where I can scan a document - but only as a .pnm, .jpg & others.

If I go to 'Applications -> graphics -> scanner utility' and select 'scan', the scanner does its bit and puts a 'scanned picture.png' in my folder '/home/bob/Scan'. I can print it, but I want to use this scanned letter so that I can alter the text contained in it.

Trying to fathom the GOCR/JOCR program suggested, I installed it. In terminal at '$ gocr.tcl', I get some screens that ask for information. So in the 'file' block, I entered /home/bob/Scan/scanned picture.png (the file that was scanned above). Thinking that 'Run it' is the key, I get an error that reads 'Error prm. c L288: read magic1'.

Not understanding this, I then selected the box 'Scan' which produced the following:
"ERROR - Could not create temporary file - Open Menue Preferences -> Setup Tab Save and select a temporary directory where you have write permissions" - A second error appears:
"Failed to open '(null)': no such file or directory"

I've tried to set permission as root for bob, but when I look at the file 'Scan' properties, I see that I do not have 'write' permission in the 'Scan' folder I made. Is this my problem (at least for this issue) and if so how do I change the files so that 'bob' has 'write' permissions in that folder?

Bob
