Linux alternative to mIRC

Greetings all,

I have been messing with linux on and off for a couple of years so I guess I know a little. I am running redhat 9 and I am looking for a IRC client that is pretty close to the feature set of mIRC. I don't really know if I want to use WINE, but if I can't find something that has the features, I will probably have to install it. Does anyone know if mIRC works with the latest WINE? Also, is there another IRC client out there for linux that is as feature-rich as mIRC? I spend a lot of time on IRC so having a good client is important to me. Thanks.

If you don't mind scripting features Konversation ( http://konversation.kde.org ) is pretty good but then again I am a biased Konversation developer :)

RH9? why are you running an old system? You might face problems with getting programs to work- but make your own choices. ;)

the top two look to be the most useful

as to wine:

Thanks for the replies. I am using an old system due to the lack of support for my promise 20276 IDE RAID controller in the 2.6 kernel. I will take a look at what you have posted. I am sure I will work something out with it.

xchat seems like a fairly standard one, and has the usual features one would expect. It is well developed too so it should be available for whatever distro package system you want.

Also try, Gaim ... it has a good environment, and Xchat is a good sub to mIRC.

mIRC under wine? never tried that, but xchat is excellent.

does mIRC have anything that xchat lacks??

no offense but xchat and gaim suck compared to mIRC.

Why? I actually prefers xchat over mIRC, in my windows days I always preferred Xchat over mIRC (2-3 years ago) Nowadays you have to pay to run it on MS Windows tough.

Whats wrong with Gaim? granted it doesn't have a ton of features for IRC but one window for AIM/IRC/etc is a hell of a trade off

I think gaim for irc really lacks so many options. First you need an extension for nickserv commands. You can't autojoin, no scripts etc. Or is there a plugin/extension for that? Best I saw so far was bitchx. It's command line though

Though the kde ones were okay as well but kde looks ugly but that could be my themes.
