Linus Distro in 80286?


Hi, I have a Computer 80286 with 40MB of HD and 1MB of RAM, I know that is too old but I want to install some Linux Distro, What distro do you recommend me? , also Im thinking if I can run Knoppix or Damn Small Linux, but I dont have CD ROM installed, it is possible to install some CD ROM and what drivers I need?

Linux does not work on 80286. Linux was developed on 80386 which uses 32 bit addressing. The 80286 uses 16 bit addressing. Linux has never worked on 80286 and making it work would mean a complete rewrite from the ground up.

funny that i did a google search for a 286 distro and caught news of one for an 8086 but not a 286! lol. i guess that processor is worthless! lmao... just kidding (on the worthless part). i had heard news (a while back, years) that a port was being worked on for the 286 but am assuming it was abandoned. probably very difficult to do since, as was mentioned by jailbait above, linux was designed to run specifically on a 386.

Articles on 8086 and 80286 distros are always published on April 1.

If you really want a form of *nix on the 286 you could check into Minix. Looks like the 16 bit version may work for you.
