Linspire or Suse 9.3?

hi,

I just bought a magazine which included suse 9.3 personal edition.

I now have linspire 5. But i am not really happy with it. I had to hold a presentation to hold. and guess what. linspire froze. and openoffice was extremely slow.

now i like the cnr function and the fact that linspire detects my sound. but i want to know if suse is better then linspire with stability.,more programs (and more updated then openoffice 1.0) etc.

suse is much much better than linspire, i definatly would NOT reccomend linspire. and btw, cnr is a complete knock off of debian apt-get w/ synaptic. give suse a shot, you will probs like it more :)

i want to install suse. but i cant. my computer does see the dvd rw. but if i put a cdrom in it. or dvd. i cannot load it. it's like it wont see it even if its there.

Every distro is stable when set up correctly.
Every distro has literally tens of thousands of programs available to install (as long as you have an internet connection).

Answer me this - how Linspire is different than SCO. Shame on them both! I run Suse since it's more stable, faster and by using it I don't support business "ethics"

I don't see what's so bad about Linspire customising the desktop and charging for programs which they have modified. Being Debian based, you can get bunches of software for free.

Do you have any facts and figures to back that claim?

SlackerLX 08-21-2005 12:05 PM

Do I have to explain about business ethics? Or it's fairly simple! About being fact just run the benchmark

I am going to assume you were able to boot the Linspire CD when you installed it and your BIOS settings are okay.
What files are on the "Suse" DVD when you browse it? A lot of RPMs in folders or ISO files?

dragonforce 08-21-2005 02:37 PM

thats the problem. i see nothing in it. i can open it. but i see nothing. also the dvd/cdrom icon that was on the desktop dissapeared

2damncommon 08-21-2005 02:56 PM

Sorry then, I misunderstood "my computer does see the dvd rw".
Sometimes software CDs in books or magazines are not the best quality. That is a possibility.
The magazine's DVD could be a dual layer while your DVD player will not play dual layer.
Is there a page in the magazine that states what type of DVD it is, what is on it, and how to use it?
Is the entire DVD supposed to be a bootable Suse install?
What system are you trying to view the DVD in? If it is Linspire I can reboot to my Linspire and tell you what I need to do to see a DVD.

dragonforce 08-21-2005 03:00 PM

hi,

It doesnt see any dvd or cdrom.

dragonforce 08-21-2005 03:36 PM

Okay, so I booted into Linspire.
When I insert a Linux install CD, konqueror shows me the files in less than a minute.
When I insert the FC4 install DVD, konqueror shows me the files in less than a minute.
When I insert my Suse dual layer install DVD, the default Linspire browser opens and I cannot view the DVD by clicking on the CD/DVD icon.
When I insert my only other dual layer DVD (Linux DVD archives), konqueror shows me the files in less than a minute.
My Suse DVD works as I have installed it to 2 PCs.
Does your "doesnt see any dvd or cdrom" apply just to the magazine CD or any CD or DVD? (Excluding movie DVD for now.)

Please post what the magazine claims is on the DVD and how they say to use it. It does not work if you put the DVD in the drive and reboot your computer, right?

Then let's check it out Linux style.
Can you post your /etc/fstab file?
