Line wrap errors with ssh / xterm / bash and up-arrow to edit

I'm having persistent problems on several machines with line wrapping, on ssh sessions :-(. I might type:

[bryce@foo]$ echo "This is a long line that goes on and on without really saying anything at all, it just sort of repeats and wanders and eventually gets back to the same subject, the long line."

If I press the "up arrow" key, I can edit that command line. But over an ssh session it screws up:

[bryce@foo] ssh fum
[bryce@fum] echo "This is a long line that goes oe@fum bryce]$ echo "This is a long line that goes ots and wanders and eventually gets bacine that goes onts and wanders and
eventually gets baine that goes on ts and wanders and eventually gets bine that goes on ats and wanders and eventually gets ine that goes on ants
> d wanders and eventually getsine that goes on andts and wanders and eventually getine that goes on and ts and wanders and eventually geine that g
> s on and ots and wanders and eventually gine that goes on and onts and wanders and eventually s on and on ts and wanders and eventualg line that g

Everything seems OK with the terminal types:

[bryce@foo]$ echo $TERM
xterm
[bryce@foo]$ tset
Erase is delete.
Kill is control-U (^U).
Interrupt is control-C (^C).
[bryce@foo]$ echo $PS1
[\u@\h]\$

All machines are assorted 6 & 7 revisions of Redhat. Any clues for me?
