Lilo problem

I just recently installed Red Hat 7.1 on my Compaq Deskpro 2000 (I know ) . I was able to install all the packages i wanted but as it was doing the "Post Installation Process" I received an Error that instructed me to create a boot floppy. That I did. The system will fine with the floppy but without it it hangs at Li

I have included the contents of the /etc/lilo.conf file

boot=/dev/hdd
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-2
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hdd6

I have ran ./sbin/lilo
and the message I get is

"/dev/hdd is not on the first disk" ?????

I have one hard drive . I have both the hard drive and the cdrom on the same IDE controller (master/slave)??? Could this be a problem...I needed it that way for the Compaq Deskpro 2000 to install Linux (bug with Compaq).

Any help would be great!!!

well hdd is the secondary slave, you should put the drive on hda if possible.

Then change the lilo.conf file to read

boot=/dev/hda <----------
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

image=/boot/vmlinuz=2.4.2-2
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda6 <-----

????

Are there any other changes that need to be made after I switch
the drive to the other controller???

That's it. As long as all references to hdd are changed to hda, all you need to do is execute lilo to wite the changes.

Hi,
I had the same symptom and resolved it as follows:
My problem was that my hard disk was greater than 2GB and my ide controller was using logical block addressing to translate cyl,head,sector addresses into sequential block addresses. Lilo had to understand this so I tried the option "linear" in the lilo configuration file and issued the "lilo" command to rebuild lilo on the hard disk. The problem disappeared and I'm now able to boot from the hard disk (much faster).
Sorry if this problem is not the cause in your case.
Good Luck

i had problems with mine at first also...
i have 2 hard drives, windows on hda1, linux swap on hdb1 and linux data on hdb5...
i think for you it could be as simple as placing the proper drives with their numbers....

boot=/dev/hda1 <~~~~~

root=/dev/hda6 <~~~~~ make sure that it is 6 and not 5 or something else, ive noticed that the partition numbers can be off sometimes.... but if you only have one hard drive it should be

root=/dev/hda6

by partition mount numbers would mean that hdd is not on your system... hda = 1 hard drive, hdb = 2 hard drives, etc... even with 3 partitionson one hard drive, they would be hda1, hda5, hda6...
hope this helps, i had trouble with my LILO at first too but now i have a fully functioning dual boot system...

boot = /dev/hda
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout = 1
change-rules
reset
vga = normal
image = /vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda1
label = Linux
read-only

that is my whole lilo.conf
btw run liloconf again n make it boot on mbr not the drive trust me its the only solution it took me a long time to work it out n its the only one that works
Enjoy

Friggin A, kids, why disturb a perfectly dead 3 month old thread?!
<Python>
It was no more! It had ceased to be! Expired and gone to meet its maker! A stiff! Bereft of life, it rested in peace! Its metabolic processes were history! It had kicked the bucket, shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!It had fsckin' snuffed it!..... THIS was AN EX-THREAD!!

it may have been here 3 months ago but some people arent able to look through 300 posts just to find one line that suits their particular problem, thats why this is a message board... so people can post messages and get help.

It may be dead to those of you that have been here awhile but to some of us that are still new and dont want to go through 300 posts then this is fine...

hopefully someone that is running 2 different distros liek you can understand....
