LILO and BIOS Data Check

When I boot up my computer and choose "Linux" from the LILO menu, the system pauses for about 10 seconds while periods are printed after "Loading Linux..." and then the message "BIOS data check successful" appears. This didn't happen on my other system when using LILO. What is the data check, is it necessary, and how can I turn it off if it isn't? Thanks.
