Question libusb is installed but compiling hplip it tells me it's not available!

I'm using PCLinuxOS (KDE version) to install hplip via source. I'm compiling it per the instructions on hplipopensource.com for PCLOS and I'm getting an error I can't figure out.

Code:
checking for usb_init in -lusb... no
configure: error: cannot find libusb support
I have libusb and its varients and devel packages installed. I've since rebooted twice and it still won't work. Can someone help me fix this? I've been trying to get hplip to install on ANY linux distro and so far I've not had much luck getting my wireless HP printer to work. It's worked before on ubuntu-varients but not other distros. I am trying to stay away from ubuntu because I don't agree with Canonicals business strategy.

PCLinuxOS 2012 : hplip-3.11.10 gets installed at OS install.
( Also present : hplip-common, hplip-gui, hplip-hpijs, hplip-libs.)

Which version of PCLinuxOS is it about ? ( cat /etc/issue ).
Why not install hplip with apt / synaptic, if the packages aren't installed ?
# apt-get install hplip hplip-gui hplip-hpijs

Which version of hplip are you trying to install ? ?

P.S. : PCLinuxOS 2012, no issues, either method ..

1) Building rpm packages from hplip-3.12.4-2.fc18.i686.rpm ..
$ rpmbuild -bb edited-hplip3.12.4.spec ( Edited to pclos syntax.)
→→ 30 patches were included.

2) Plain './configure && make' from the hplip-3.12.4 source.

3) Building rpm packages from hplip-3.12.2-3.mga2.src.rpm ..
$ rpmbuild -bb edited-mga-hplip3.12.2.spec
→→ 57 patches are included in this Mandriva / Mageia source src.
