LibreOffice 3.5.7.2 in Fedora 17 - Writer - envelopes Brother HL2240 printer

I seem to be unable to do envelopes

No matter what I do the printing is perpendicular to the long axis of the envelope.

I tell writer I want to do an envelope

It lets me enter the sender and addresse - looks good

I open the back of the printer and toggle some green levers and open the paper path so it goes straight out the back

I open the door on the front of the printer and set the side gizmos to the height of the envelope

I put in the envelope - it grabs it - and prints parallel to the short axis.

I have fiddled with portrait and landscape and with various paper source options - always the same

Can someone lead me out of this darkness? I just hand addressed mailing a legal form and it really looked hokey.

I can print envelopes with LibreOffice 4.0.0.3 and Brother HL-5340D laser printer.

I use the paper envelopes for CD/DVD such as these ones.

I don’t tell LO Writer nothing and it asks me nothing.

Instead I prepare the file for LO Drawing like this one:

envelope.odg

Then I do what you do.

The printout is correct.

If you own such envelopes try to print one using my file. In the other case prepare a piece of paper 12.5×12.5 cm and print the text on it. It should go along the upper edge of the envelope.

I sounds like you have not solved the problem that I am trying to solve. It sounds like you have switched to an envelope that is enough like piece of paper so that you can print it normally. My goal is to be able to print the type of envelope that is normally used for 8.5x11 paper. That envelope is too long to feed into a printer with the long side of the envelope parallel to what is normally the short axis of a piece of paper. The printer has provision for feeding the envelope into a narrow slot that is different from the tray of paper, with the long axis of the envelope parallel with the long axis of a piece of paper. The printer needs to shift into landscape mode to print this way. I don't see how to get libre office to do that.

I previously used open office and a HP printer, and they did what I am trying to do.

So run LibreOffice Drawing. Put your text into the frame. Use “Modify | Rotate” option to rotate the frame 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise (keep Shift pressed during that operation). Move the frame to the right place. Finally print your envelope.

FIXED - the solution is to modify the LO output to the printer from pdf to postscript

I went to the libre office bugzilla and got that workaround

When it is time to print the envelope, go to the print screen, pick General, Properties, Device, Printer Language Type

change from the default (PDF) to Postscript - and it works just as it is supposed to.
