library qt not found

I am trying to build a program, but during ./configure, I get this:

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 2.2.2) (library qt) not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.

I have installed qt 4.2.3, and already had qt 3.3.8 (just noticed). both qt designer apps work fine. qt 4.2.3 is installed in /usr/local/qt and 3.3.8 is in usr/lib/qt-3.3.8 and /usr/lib/qt

thanks

oh yeah, I am using slackware 12

tried ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/qt and no luck
./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/local/qt doesn't work either

i think qt3 and qt4 are quite different.
a program written for one cannot use and will not be able to find the other.
