library installation problem

okay, this has long puzzled me about linux. I get the source tars for a few libraries, one of which is dependent on the other. When I try to build one that is dependent on the other it will claim I don't have the library it is dependent on, even if I built it (make install) from source? What am I missing? In this case it's libcdio that I built, and then attempted to build libvcd which needs that. But it isn't just here, for example once I wanted to upgrade my gaim app so I downloaded the source and make then make installed it and when I ran gaim again it was still the old version? There is something fundamental about linux I am not getting.

Most likely your gaim issue is that you already had a previous version installed and its launching that version that is in your path. Did you actually get errors when compiling? If you provide more details of the output when compiling, its more helpful to determine the actual problem.
