libjpeg - 64 bit problem

anyone know anything about this? i'm trying to compile libjpeg on fedora core 2 (64-bit) and i'm getting this error

Code:
Invalid configuration 'x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine 'x86_64-unknown' not recognized
this is on an intel xeon em64t chip, also on a NON-updated version of fedora since i'm currently on dialup....and can't get this modem i have to work (driver issues)... so i'm typing this using windoze

anyways...if anyone can help out with this it would be cool.....

(not having any problems with any of the other programs i've been compiling)

oh... and here is my (very simple) install script

Code:
libjpeg() {
    cd /usr/src/jpeg-6b
    ./configure --enable-shared
    make
    make install
}

one thing i might point out is that without --enable-shared it does seem to configure properly..... but i believe i need shared mode for it to work properly with php.

again.... any help appreciated.
