Question libexpat not found but at the same time is newest version

I'm trying to install e-mule (or lmule for linux) however when I tried to configure it I always get message libexpat not found half way through. However when I run apt-get it brings back the message of : libexpat is newest version. What may have happened is that I tried once and it wasn't there and so I went and got it, could this have interupted the ./configure , if so how do I undo it?

Thanks in advance
