libdvdnav not found by mplayer

I installed libdvdnav, it's located in /usr/local/lib

bash-2.05b# slocate libdvdnav
It also doesn't find libdvdread, but that's installed as well. It does, however, say that libmpdvdkit is installed, although it only gets installed when mplayer installs itself.
Anyone know how to make it find libdvdnav? I'd like to be able to use dvd menus like normal people would....
