I haven't found anything netside on this topic yet. It isn't a development version, and I installed ORBitcpp earlier, successfully. Any suggestions?

Try gmake clean prior to build.
Have Fun,

Unfortunately, that did not work.

Could you suggest how I could help myself? I am despondent at this point. What documentation out there might help?

http://gtkmm.sourceforge.net/gtkmm2/docs/
is the project Documentation. I'm not a c or c++ programer so I don't really know what to look for.
http://www.gtkmm.org/docs/gtkmm-2.4/docs/
for the development version

The following gleaned from that maanual-
libbonobomm
Dependencies: atk bash binutils bzip2 coreutils diffutils expat findutils gcc3 glib
Dependencies: glibc23 grep gtk+ gtkmm indent libbonobo libsigc++ linux24-header
Dependencies: m4 make mktemp net-tools orbit2 orbitcpp pango pkgconfig popt sed
Dependencies: sysfiles tar util-linux xfree86

Might be something simple like a missing package.

All the best

Dear Larry,

I was loathe (and too lazy) to do that before. Not knowing the versions needed intimidated me too. I'm now trying this route. Thank you for taking the time on this one.

In the meantime, I've discovered Kdevelop and Qt (I was using anjuta and GNOME). I'll be trying both. Here's crossing my fingers.
