ld cannot find libraries unless they end in .so; how to I change this?

I'm building a program that has 50 or so library files that it references. The make file contains a line "-L/usr/lib" with the libraries such as "-lgif" following. ld should find the gif library in /usr/lib, but it will only find it if I create a symbolic link named "libgif.so". How do I make it "see" these other library files that don't end in .so? I've run ldconfig, but that didn't change anything.

Thanks,
Ryan
