lay-out apps

Hello all,

To me has been assigned the task of performing the lay-out of our newspaper. I've been happy to accept the job, beacuse the former lay-out has always been done in msword. Now it's my chance to prove that with Linux, I can do a better job!

Are there programs you can recommend that I might use, and how? I've got koffice and I've got the GIMP, so far the only two I can think of.

I think that like in msword, lay-out in itself could be done in kword? And is the GIMP suitable?

Yes. Other possibilities are Open Office and Abiword. Of the three I think that Open Office has the most functions available.

And is the GIMP suitable?
Yes.

If you are doing layout in HTML or XHTML then I recommend bluefish.

The GIMP isn't suitable for layout, but it does image manipulation quite nicely. The granddaddy of all layout engines is TeX, but it isn't very straightforward for something like a newspaper. You might want to have a look at Scribus, which comes closest to being Pagemaker for Linux.
