I think this has to do with the MIME-handling in gnome.

I did this on my system last night.

In Gnome, go up to the panel and click

(I don't remember perfectly and only have WinXP at work, so explore around but this is pretty close in Gnome 2.4)

Applications
---System
---- Settings(?)
----- Gnome
---- Gnome Control Center

and a windows opens up.

In there, there is an application called "File Types" or somesuch. Open it.

In that list, look for http, and edit the settings on it by picking Mozilla as the application to open http with.

After you do that and save, you will find that if you pop open an email containing a link and click it, mozilla launches.
