Thanks for replying. Is that all I need to setup software Raid1 on my system. Is there any other packages I need beside RaidTools...Sorry, I have always depended on Redhat to do this for me, but now I must do it from scratch on an already running system. I would appreciate any more help on this.
Unzip the raidtools and read the README and INSTALL stuff for dependancy and kernel info. Kernel info will be important for any kernel <2.4 as you may need a patch.
Ok...I downloaded and installed .90 raidtools and followed readme instruction and I am getting this when I do:
root@viper~# mkraid /dev/md0
handling MD device /dev/md0
analyzing super-block
disk 0: /dev/sda1, 8458191kB, raid superblock at 8458112kB
/dev/sda1 is mounted
mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues.
My /proc/mdstat
root@viper~# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [raid1]
read_ahead not set
unused devices: <none>
root@viper~#
I did not apply any patches cause I am running new kernel 2.47
Do I need to change a partition's system id to Linux raid auto on both disks,..Will I lose any data if do this on partition that is currently running the OS??
