Last Resort "Sound won't work!

I am having a tough time getting my sound to work at all. I have a SBLive card which is supported by alsa and I have the module for my card emu10k1. All my levels are all the way up and and my card is configured. I know My card works because I a dual-boot with WIN98 and the sound works fine. right know I am running mandrake 10, but I had fedora and the sound didn't work either. I also had dibian and the only way I could get the sound to work was to copy the alsa.autoconfig file to my modutils.conf file but I was told that was a bad idea. also I could not control the sound. here is some info that might be useful.
cat /etc/modules.conf
probeall usb-interface usb-uhci
alias eth0 8139too
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
