I have seen some shift over to PostgreSQL away from MySQL. The NoSQL database servers are getting some attention. Quite a few web servers use lighttpd instead of Apache. Various other languages are used from Java (server side), to Pike, to Ruby, and many more (even still some C). And there is BSD (and I've heard there might be another).
Thanks everyone for your answers.
The interest has shifted direction.

I appreciate your responses and so I now redirect you to see if you can help answer the new question concerning efficiently organising the data.
