Laggy Weirdness in Gaim

When I use gaim, it seems like incoming (and possibly outgoing?) messages are delayed by a significant number of seconds. Some times are longer than others. Last night, I had stopped receiving messages altogether, and after restarting the program, people told me that I had disappeared 20 minutes ago, without gaim telling me.

At another time, I was on the phone with someone who was going to IM me a link. Gaim told me that I had lost the connection, but the person on the line told me that it said I was still online. He sent me the message while I was still "offline" and I received it several seconds after gaim told me I had reconnected.

Is anyone familiar with any of this? If I used a different IM client, would it probably be better? Is there anything I can do to the gaim to fix it? This never used to happen (I think...). I use Debian and am on a wireless lan with a dialup connection.

I'm not sure; I only use AIM.

Someone told me that it's probably the wireless doing it, so I'm going to pull out my ethernet card and give it a shot tonight. I'll post back with the results.
