laggy mouse and black background for icons.

Hi all,
I just installed slackware 14.0 yesterday from the dvd ( everything except Tcl/Tck, emac and kde).
I'm using xfce. The mouse is too laggy and and the response is too slow. Moreover, all icons have black boxes around them.
Although running any programs from terminal does not display any error messages and xorg starts fine, opening firefox from scrotwm had produced recurring errors such as "gtk-clipboard critical null failed"

My specs: Athlon AMD64 Dual X2
Asus M2V-TVM motherboard
VIA DeltaChrome (driver: openchrome)

Please help. My system has become utterly unusable..

I can't answer this but I suggested it be moved to the Slackware forum.
