"i am logged in as root, i hit the kppp launcher on my panel, i get this message:
'the password you typed is incorrect. please try again.' (note: i am logged in as root!)
but when i use the terminal, and type kppp, it works just fine - i.e kppp is launched without a problem."
You could try changing the kppp launcher on your panel to run kppp in a terminal. To change the kppp launcher panel entry right click on the menu icon, click on menu editor, and find kppp in the menu. Then click on Run in Terminal and Apply.
i did manage to solve the problem.
what i did was;
right clicked launcher for 'properties'
then went to 'application' and 'advanced option'
there i selected 'run as a different user' and defined 'root' as the user.
voila! it worked. now the launcher works just fine, no password issues. i didnt really have a problem going through the terminal each time, but this tiny issue was bothering me.
well i don't really know the logic behind what i did, it's been trial and error for a few weeks now, this time it just worked, but i would love to know what i really did, and is it correct.

This happened to me also. I am also using the same PCQ Linux 2004.
This is because there are two directories containing kppp one is /usr/bin and the other is /sbin. If you use as the root, it should run kppp from /sbin however by default it will not. Earlier it happened in my case. I too could not resolve the problem for a long time but then when I linked my root users kppp to /sbin it worked.
