Hiya. I've just discovered Kopete and found out that I just may start using it instead of Gaim, which started segfaulting since version 1.1.3 and onward. However, there are two problems.
1.) When I started using Linux I logged into some forum with Konqueror and up came KDE wallet whining about security and such. I don't quite remember what I did, but now, when I use Kopete, whenever I add an account, it starts bugging me for a password. Is there a way to undo what I did in KDE wallet? What files should I delete?
2.) This one's simple. Kopete won't reconnect. Whenever MSN or whichever network goes offline, I have to reconnect manually. Which is a bit annoying. I've looked all over the options menu, but nothing. Any ideas?
Wallett is a place where all your passwords go. You visit alot of sites and you have alot of passwords. You either have a great memory and/or you use the same passwords over and over. In the case of reuse, if you do, you are opening yourself up to security risks. Since there are so many sites and so many programs that can and do ask for passwords wallett sort of holds your passwords for these site (securely) and then prompts you for a single password when you log on.
For instance, when you log into kopete you can set up accounts for AIM, MSN, and Yahoo (among others). You can do this all from within the same program. If you have 2 or more passwords you'd have to enter 2 or more of them each time you launched kopete.
So, instead, wallett is holding those passwords for those accounts and only prompts you to verify you are who you say you are by having you enter one passwords when you first access a program that prompts for a password.
Needless to say it is a nice way to manage your passwords and keep it secure while only demanding a single password from you for verifiction.
It's just two passwords. One for MSN in Kopete and one for a forum I'm not even a member of anymore. It sounds great but I don't like how it asks me for a password (Wallet's password, NOT MSN's) each time I have to manually login to MSN.
You can disable the KDE wallet system entirely by clicking KMenu (or start button as it is called because of Windows) then click Preferences---More Preferences---Wallet Management Tool. After the Management tool opens click on Settings then click on Configure Wallet. There will be a check box which will read "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem." Simply remove the check from this box and the system will be disabled and you will not have to fool with KDE wallet anymore. I hope this helps
