konqueror *is* slow on slow computers which seems to be because it shows content the moment it comes in instead of waiting a little causing the layout of a page to refresh many times.. taking a great deal of cycles and making konqueror completely unresponsive.
mozilla on the otherhand, renders pages usually in one go causing it to actually be less processor intensive than konqueror.

On Suse 10 Konqueror seems to be faster then or equal to Firefox. If I am correct, the issue you mention should have been fixed in newer versions of Konqueror.
I had the same problem. Well, konqueror was slow for me with loading webpages. However, firefox has been a pain lately, and slowing down EVERYTHING. Loads pages fast..but something about the gui..or something makes everything crawl (for me). After upgrading to kde 3.5 rc1, konqueor is loading webpages really fast..not to mention, the gui is fast, and slows nothing down at all.
