can't find pthread library

I'm running suse 9.1 on my computer. I have been trying to install a few programs in both YAST2 and Konsole. When I try to install the rpm in Yast2 i get an error message that has no report in it. When i try either a rpm or a tar package in konsole the configuration runs fine until it searches for the Pthread library. It give me a message that the Pthread library cannot be found and the configuration stops. I read a post for a similar problem that suggested to copy the library into the file with the tar package. I tried that but it still doesn't find it. This problem only seems to occure when i try to install desktop GUI programs such as Kmpio (mp3 player interface) and giFT, command promp programs seem to work fine and i have also installed a game with no problem. Any ideas for a solution or at least where i can start looking?
