kmail verizon dsl smtp setup

Hi,
please bear with me i am a relative newbie.

i am trying to setup kmail to send and recieve mail.

I recieve using my own pop at mail.myjourneyonline.org
to send I am using outgoing.verizon.net which is my isp.
I have tried port #'s 25, 587 and 465
but i cannot connect to verizon and send mail at all.
Does anybody know what encryption and authentication verizon uses.
I have it currently set to 'none' and 'plain'
I have set 'server requires authentication' and entered my user name and password.

The pop mail works fine and I can send mail from my yahoo webmail and recieve it into an account setup in kmail on username@myjourneyonline.org.

I hope someone out there has some info on this problem. I have no trouble sending mail on Outlook Express but am wanting to get rid of my last Windows machine and put ubuntu on it.
BTW I am trying to set this up on my laptop with Ark Linux - kernel 2.6.17 and KDE 3.5 (if that helps any).

There should be a button on the top that says "Check What the Server Supports" click that and it should find out what the authentication method is.

This Page has more details for you.

Verizon's SMTP server (port 25) requires authentication... You need to check that and supply your e-mail ID and PW for your account...

For Security use: None and Login...

I've done some googleing on this, and I come up with two possible answers.

1) try port 80.

2) if the From: address is not username@verizon.net, it will be blocked.

I can't verify either of these. I googled on "verizon dsl setup" and just started reading.

Mayhap it's a dhcp setup problem?

Still no luck, I checked in my outlook express on my windoze machine and found the following.
Authentication is required is checked.
smtp port is 25
the user id is just userid with no @verizon.net
and the password is entered.
It seems to work fine from outlook express; however, no luck trying to replicate it in kmail.
I have port 25
i have outgoing.verizon.net as smtp server
I have authentication checked with my userid and password no @verizon.net
I also have security checked as 'none' and authentication checked as 'login'
I have also tried with 'ssl' and 'plain' still nothing.
If i click on the button to discover the server settings it does not do anything, i am not sure why?

Still no luck

I did not manage to kmail to work as i originally wanted which is a bummer because i wanted to use kontact as my pim.

I did get thunderbird working using basic defaults, i also use netscape 7.2 with wine and after loading some windoze fonts it was quite decent looking and the mail part of it was a cinch to setup.

thanks to all who participated and offered helpful ideas.
