kmail issue-klauncher

I am getting overrun by klauncher processes. They don't die, and I end up with hundreds of these :
cilla 20411 4631 0 09:31 ? 00:00:00 kio_pop3 [kdeinit] pop3 /tmp/ksocket-cilla/klauncherxI62Ba.slav

and email stops working
I now have to run a cron job and kill them every 30 minutes.
I am running openSUSE 10.2 and kde 3.5.7 release 74.1

what can I do to get rid of these, or why don't they expire or die??
I think one appears for each email ID, each time mail is checked.
