kino - help with exporting video
 

I'm not in front of my linux box, but I'll try to remember what was happening...

I installed kino a few weeks ago on my mandriva box. After I got the "capturing" figured out (thanks petespin27), I tried to "export" to mpeg so I could burn a DVD.

On the Export screen, when I enter a filename (w/o the extension) under the MPEG tab, kino states "Exporting....blah blah" ... and then about 20 to 25 minutes later, it shows "Export finished".

At first the problem was that there was NO FILE with the name I specified (no output file). Found out that when you check the box "remove temporary files" it removes the MAIN OUTPUT FILE (seems stupid to me...). Anyway, I unchecked the box, and exported again. Then I DID have an output file. OK good...

So I start up DVDSTYLER, which supposedly uses kino's exported mgeg files, and converts them and burns a DVD, with menu, and buttons, blah blah.

Problem is that DVDSTYLER always says that the kino output file is an unrecognized format... I have tried exporting as "MPEG 2" and also as "DVD". I also tried marking the box "create dvdauthor xml file", but dvdstyler doesn't know what the hell that file is either.

Does anybody here use dvdstyler? Is there another program that can burn kino's exported files to a DVD...?

Note: I installed kino and dvdstyler with urpmi - so I have all dependencies...

I wrestled with dvd-styler a few weeks ago to make a dvd of my son's first birthday and a collection of footage that I had in the camera since april.

I do not have an explanation as to why dvd-styler does not like your mpeg2 files. It sounds as if you have the right tools and it encoded. One possibility is to try encoding under the dv pipe tab (make sure you have ffmpeg installed). Try the dual pass dvd option, and see if that works better in dvd-styler.

Here are a few links that may provide some information. Some are about the command line tools that dvd-styler uses; I find these helpful to know what the program is doing. Q-dvd author looks to be a promising program, although I have not used it ( I may try it out soon ).

ok thanks. the dvd pipe tab is one thing I have not tried yet.

I tried exporting 30 secs of video under the dvd-pipe tab. Then opened up dvdstyler. It did show the kino export file as an "mpg" file, and it did allow me to drag & drop it down to the bottom "time-line" section.

However, then dvdstyler just freezes up every time. Get the message "this program is not responding". Just like winblows.

I don't think this linux digital video is worth the hassle. I hate to buy a winblows program for grabbing video from firewire video cameras, but I probably will.

Kino does not delete the main mpeg file in Export/MPEG as you allege. It must at times number the final output for reasons involving splitting options. The fact that you are more than likely using an intermediate mpeg file instead of the final output is why DVD Sytler is having a problem.

Finally, I resent your comment on the Kino forum, since I am quite diligent about responding to nearly every post even though I now solely develop and support Kino among other open source projects while holding down a day job and raising a family.

I read through some other users threads on the kino forum, and probably got some pointers. Its just that mine did not get any replies ever.

I'll need to re-capture my digital camera video this weekend. Then play around with kino & dvdstyler some more. What are the options for converting/burning an exported kino file - besides dvdstyler? Are there other programs out there?

I never said it wasn't a "user error", I'm sure it is...
I'm new to digital video on computers, so I don't know much about it on windows either. Would love to get the hang of it on linux.
