Kinda odd....

Ok, so firefox works, normal DSL speeds, Ayttm works, but Thunderbidr doesn't. It just hangs at connecting to pop.gmail.com, any idea why?

Does any other mail client work with pop.gmail.com?

If it's a standard POP account then yeah... why wouldn't it?

Have you enabled POP mail through your Gmail web interface?
Have you followed their instructions and setup your Gmail servers right?

It seems to by my Internet, I can access https://pop.gmail.cpm:995 directly through firefox, and Evolution connects through smtp.gmail.com, but not pop.gmail.com kinda odd, anybody know why this is?

The GMail POP server is secure. So it has to be set up differently than a 'normal' account (has to use port 995, rather than 110, first of all).

But I can confirm that it most definitely does work; I have GMail set to send a copy of each GMail I get to my regular ISP inbox (so that, in case Firefox-- where I use the GMail Notifier extension-- is oddly not open, I still know if I have new GMail). You can also forward your GMail directly to your ISP account, but I don't see much point in that atm.

Thunderbird checks the GMail account fine and downloads the copy, and I can look at it, handle it, or just go directly to GMail and manage the originals. The copy on my HDD I just delete. I presume I could also answer directly from Thunderbird (since the account settings are set to display my GMail info and not my ISP address, but I don't use GMail for mail I need to answer at this time).

I thought I was right. And if you have another account, you can't use the
Gmail SMTP server, also, in Thunderbird. It only allows you to use one SMTP
server at a time.

(Hi, Chinaman! How ya doin'? )

Well, kinda... but you can configure multiple SMTP servers, and you can set individual accounts to use a specific SMTP server. Since the GMail account in T-bird is a separate account from my 'regular' ISP account, it can be (and is) set to use a different SMTP server than my 'regular' account:

Edit=>Account Preferences=>Select Account=> Server Options=> Advanced button=> SMTP tab:

My normal account is set to use my ISP's SMTP server for outgoing mail, but the GMail account is set to use GMail's SMTP server (smtp.gmail.com:587). It's a drop-down menu, so I could also use my ISP's SMTP server to send mail from this account, but I doubt that would work properly (insofar as then GMail wouldn't know that I responded to a GMail message).

Of course, I don't know if it works the way it's set up now (since I don't send mail from GMail accounts either on Thunderbird or from GMail itself), but I see no reason why it wouldn't.

It doesn't work that way here. In theory you can set two SMTP servers, but in practice, it doesn't work. At least it didn't for me, for I tried it that way. And when I look now I notice that Thunderbird says:
Quote:
Although you can specify more than one outgoing server (SMTP), this is recommended only for advanced users. Setting up multiple SMTP servers can cause errors when sending messages.
It did for me, but it's been so long, I forgot what the errors were.

The header for my Gmail still says it's Gmail, just shows which SMTP server sent it. As far as Gmail knowing, if you send it from an email client and not the Gmail web interface, there's no record of the sent messages at Gmail, anyway. So for that reason, in addition to whatever other problem it had, I just use my regular SMTP server for all accounts.

We've been quite surprised by Gmail. We all three have an account, just because they were available. My little 4-year old Slacker only uses Gmail, and none of our accounts has gotten one piece of spam. Plus the SSL is nice for us.

We're in the States for about 3 months, btw.
