Angry Killing Clients and locking up

Mandy 9.0 -
I had it running fine until I had problems with the "vipw locked file" problem adding users. When I did a reboot it took me to a Text user login screen. I logged in and removed the /etc/ptmp file to correct the lockfile problem. Now whenever I startx it starts clients and kills another to the point it even says "Too many Clients!" It does that about 1 every second and eventually locks the system up completely in about 3-5 minutes.
