Unhappy "key-click" in X11R6 doesn't work

My first question for the LQ crowd:

I tried running 'xset c 100' and 'xset c on' and got no happy result. Also tried adding it to my ~/.xinitrc

I read every related result on google web/groups, and I can't figure why I'm not getting any clicking. I forget why I even want to hear unnecessary noise, but I know deep down that I do

Does anyone know why it may not be working and/or what I can try?
