Kernel upgrade to 2.6 Problem - Reward for Helping
 

Hello, I'm having trouble getting the 2.6 kernel working on my system. I have tried 2.6.6 and 2.6.7 but I get the same error message each time. I am currently running Debian Sarge installed with the net install (2.4.25-1-386) I did not install the 2.6 kernel with the net installer because it could not partition my disk, and thus could not install. This IRQ error slows my system down to a crawl, so much so that it takes 15+ minutes to boot up. I have searched google many times and have found other people with my problem, but none with a solution. I have tried kernel paramaters "noapic nolapic and acip=off" without much luck, noapic is the only one that gets rid of the error, but it is replaced by "Disabling IRQ #9" and my system is slowed even more. I have also tried "noirqdebug" but it does not seem to effect the boot at all. My .config file can be found here: http://www.pastebin.com/82518

I have also noticed erratic mouse movment under the 2.6 kernel, including loss of mouse wheel, and lack of smooth movment (very choppy), but that is secondary to getting it up and running.

Try acpi. Spelling is very important in code. I would try the boot option pci=noacpi
The real solution is probably to be found in recompiling the kernel and selecting support for the right chipset on the Device Drivers> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support> menu. I only found out what works on our computers by trial and error. So you'll probably find it will be you that wins your own prize by fixing this yourself. Goodluck

the spelling error was actully only in my post, I have been spelling it correctly during boot. I have probably re-compiled the kernel 25 times, and I will continue to do so. Is there any way of detecting what driver would be appropriate for my chipset?

I just installed my new system wih Mandrake 10 and I had a similar issue. Mind you that my mobo is a Asus P4P800 SE (with i865) so things might be different but... who knows.
I was getting "Disabling IRQ #18" and - because of this - the boot was really, really slow. I played a little bit with the BIOS settings and these warnings stopped when - in the IDE configuration - I changed the "Enhanced Mode Support On" from P-ATA+S-ATA to S-ATA. I thought I had to use that since I had an older PATA drive but it was not necessary.
If this doesn't help you, then you have to dig into your hardware conf.

Same Mobo : P4P800 SE

I do not get any slowness at startup but have experienced some rather long freezes during X sessions. I just compiled a tight new kernel 2.6.7 that still lacks proper sound support and needs further tweakings but it seems the freezes have gone away.
