Kernel Upgrade Problem
My system - RH9, all updates recent - kernel 2.4.20-19.9
Till about an hour back, I was on 2.4.20-18.9. My regular kernel upgrade command is rpm -Fvh until this upgrade.
This time I did a rpm -ivh because I read, perhaps on LQ that someone had problems after upgrading to 2.4.20-19.9; I wanted to play safe.
After I completed the upgrade, I booted my workstation to find the system displaying just GRUB and not responding.
I managed to get the system up using my GRUB boot floppy, and ran
grub-install /dev/hda to rewrite the MBR.
Everything works fine now, I am able to boot without the help of my trusted GRUB boot floppy.
My question is, has anyone faced this situation? Did the kernel upgrade process do something to my MBR (my guts say very unlikely) or was it just a coincidence?
My logs do not show any indication of a failing disk, bad sectors etc.
