Kernel recompiling error on SuSE 9.1
I am a complete newbie when it comes to linux, and just the other day, I thought "let's recompile the kernel!" I downloaded kernel 2.8 from www.kernel.org, compiled, etc, and edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to include the new bzImage. When I rebooted, I got a kernel panic error. My questions are:
a) What went wrong? b) can I only compile kernel 2.6 with suse 9.1? Thanks, yuun :Pengy: P.S. I'll try to get the exact error message when I reboot with the new image again, and post here, thanks. |
a)u have not provided any technical info .. in the first place... so its kinda difficult to comment on what might have gone wrong...
b) there is nothing like being only able to compile a kernel .. u have all the stuff required for the compilation of the kernel. any way .. you can always go back to ur old kernel....by editing/restoring the old grub.conf. |
I apologize...
The error message I get is "Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,3)" If there is any other info needed just ask. Thanks, yuun |
