kernel panic after new install

I have a major problem (to me anyway)

Tried to compile and install anew kernel, not sure if the problem is with the kernel or lilo but I now can't boot my system I get

Code:

VFS: Cannot open root device "301" or unknown-block(3,1)

Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)

lilo does have a root option though

root=/dev/hda1

and when I try and revert to LinuxOLD label/ sbin/lilo seems to work ok but I still get this kernel panic on reboot. What can I do to get my system back up?

your old kernel should still be in your /boot directory. you can point lilo to that, and reinstall lilo.

I'm fairly certain I've done that but maybe for some reason lilo is not working properly because I'm still getting the boot messages above.
