kernel modules problem

I'm having issues with kernel modules,

When I modprobe nfs I get

WARNING: Error inserting sunrpc (/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting lockd (/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/kernel/fs/lockd/lockd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting nfs (/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/kernel/fs/nfs/nfs.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

and soundcore,

FATAL: Error inserting soundcore (/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I've tried re-emerging gentoo-sources, recopiling the kernel, modules-update. I didnt' touch the alsa-driver package as I've had that problem before. I'm using gentoo, 2.6.17.

Help! It's driving me nuts. Have I missed some vital kernel setting?

Have you tried compiling NFS into the kernel rather than as a module? I recently compiled one of the 2.6.17 gentoo kernels with NFS support built into the kernel and didn't have any issues. Same again yesterday with the 2.6.18-rc4 kernel.
