Kernel compiling on SUSE 9

I would like to compile my first kernel (2.4.23) on a SUSE 9.0. My question: I have combed the net, read a bunch of articles on compiling, and I am confused about how to make sure I can boot either the new kernel or the present one.
Do I need to rename the present kernel? How? I went into /boot/vmlinuz, and there was an "EXTRAVERSION," but it was not named as the kernel compile guide I read on this forum. Is it safe to change that?

Thanks for your time and patience.

You shold use extra version to give your kernel a unique name. To have the option of which kernel you boot you should copy your bootloader entry change the name of the kernel in the second entry to the name of your new one.

Thanks. I'll attempt in a few days, when I get up the nerve
