Exclamation kernel compile: reiserfs module error

I've just re-compiled the 2.4.20 kernel, removing various functions which I don't need such as Firewire. And I've managed to break my machine, the reiserfs module I compiled does not work, which is a significant problem as it is my root filesystem. On boot i get the following output

Code:
Problem with /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB/fs/reiserfs/reiserfs.o
unresolved symbol

DMI: BVENDOR American megatrends Inc BVERSION version 07.00T BDATE 4/6/02
DMI: SVENDOR MSI PNAME MS-6737 PVERSION 1.0
DMI: BVENDOR MSI BNAME MS-6737 BVERSION 2.0
Kernel Panic VFS, unable to mount root fs on 03:00
I have tried booting with the old kernel which doesn't work, as the problem lies with the modules, I think. I did nmot backup the modules before compiling, so one question is there a backup made of modules before overwriting? or is there a way to fix this.

cheers

if your root filesystem is reiserfs you can't compile it as a module!

BUGGER, sorry for bad language but it is needed. I accepted the default suse setup, removing very few options. you'd think they would have correct option for their default filesystem, oh well looks like I'm backing up my config files.

Never knew you had to have root fs compiled into kernel, though it seems obvious when you think about it doesn't it
