Kernel Compilation

Hows it going everyone?
Just one question.Im trying to get my modem (pctel) on a dell inspiron 8500 laptop to work. The problem i have is that the modules i downloaded with the driver which should work wont insert into the kernel even using the insmod -f command. This is due to my kernel being compiled using gcc 3 and they require gcc 2 to have been used.I also tryed to use a fix to try and convince the modules to ignore the kernel version but this didnt work.Is there anyway i can compile my kernel with the older version of gcc and is this hard?
I am fairly certain this will then allow the modules to be inserted.

Here is the text that explains the problem if interested.
