What is the last message you get (before kernel panic)?

needamiracle 04-15-2002 03:40 PM

Unable to handle kernel paging request...then it gives me a stack trace and a call trace. kernel bug at swap.c 185 invalid operand: 0000

needamiracle 04-15-2002 04:31 PM

Well,

I reduced the size of the swap partition...to 512 MB. Still getting an error though.

Its a new one:

VM: refill_inactive, wrong page on list.
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000

printing eip:
c012d572
*pde = 00000000
Oops: 0002
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<c012d572>]
EFLAGS: 00010282

.....

Process kswapd (pid: 5, stackpage=dffe5000)

And then it goes on to list the Stack and the Call trace...

I happen to have exactly the same problem. The installation went throught fine. You just can not boot the machine up!!!

The boot process seems to fail at different stages, and most errors I got was something like:
"Unable to handle kernal paging request at virtual address xxx"
and somtimes it gives:
"Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at virtual address.."

The machine I used had the following configuration:
Motherboard: Epox EP-8KTA2L
CPU: AMD Duron 800 MHz
Mem: PC-133 512 MB
Hard DIsk: Western Digital 313000, 13 GB
Graghics Card: AD CIRRUS Logic 5446 2MB PCI

This machine is used only for Linux. It used to have Soloris installed on it, but that was completely removed at the first installation attempt.

I am a newbie who is bothered by this problem. It seems that someones else are having the same problem. Is there any expert who knows what this is? I really need your help.

Thanks so much for your attention and solution.

For me it looks like a kernel bug. have you looked in kernel Changelogs if there was such a problem? If not, write them about it.

When I loaded my macine with Linux and tried to use large swap sizes it wouldn't work with me. A friend of mine told me that I had enough memory (256@ the time) that i didn't need such a large swap size I changed it to 64 and now it works fine and is a fast operating machine. Hope it works for u 2.

I had a similar problem a while ago. If you can check your ram with a good program. I found one memtest I cant remember where but it is free. The post check at boot up is not good enough. Also caused sig 11 faults compiling kernel.
